Our Impact

Together we are making investments that have a collective impact on the Napa Valley.

Expand Access

The mental health crisis does not have a one-size-fits-all solution.

Our community must have options for mental health education, services, and resources. Since 2022, SHINE partners have expanded services countywide, deepening our impact across all sites.

Students panel discussion at the Napa Valley Wellness Conference

Napa Valley Wellness Conference
Adults serving our youth need a deep understanding of youth experiences, needs, and resilience. Hosted by the Napa Valley Education Foundation and powered by SHINE partners, the Napa Valley Wellness Conference brings the local community together to engage in best practices in school-based youth mental health support. Through trainings at the conference, school leaders and mental health practitioners learn about best practices in trauma and crisis support, effective approaches to screen and connect student and families to services, and how to address bullying and special issues for marginalized groups of students.

Unserved and Underserved Communities
It’s not an effective plan if it doesn’t serve all our youth. SHINE funding enables partner organizations to place social workers and counselors at rural school sites to support students and families, including those in unserved or underserved communities like American Canyon and Angwin.

Behavior Health Awareness
SHINE expands behavioral health awareness classes to students at UpValley Family Centers, Mentis and Aldea. These classes educate students about stigma, risks, symptoms, and services. The more youth who understand when to be concerned and how to get help, the more support that is available to all youth.

Raise Awareness

People experiencing mental health challenges deserve support, compassion, and care—not stigma and shame.

SHINE agencies organized a youth-led and county-wide stigma reduction campaign.

The SHINE Podcast
If we want mental wellness to be the norm, mental health issues must be free of stigma. On the SHINE podcast, “SHINEcast,” students talk with each other to normalize discussions about mental health and how to seek support when you need it. Adults also find the podcast helpful in understanding the nuanced world of youth mental health.

Stigma Reduction Campaign
It’s no secret that a young person’s peers are incredibly influential in their lives. To combat the stigma of discussing mental health and seeking  mental wellness support, SHINE developed a youth- led and county-wide mental health stigma reduction  campaign. The campaign features videos, speakers, signage, and other outreach efforts.

Develop Safe Space

Young people need designated and accessible physical and virtual spaces to get the support they need.

SHINE improves local school spaces to create wellness centers that meet the needs of all students and families.

Wellness Centers
Mental health support must be easily accessible. SHINE has helped open Wellness Centers at Napa High School, Vintage High School, and Camille Creek School and is now working to open additional Wellness Centers in St. Helena and Napa to ensure students across all middle and high schools have a hub of services at their school site.

“Having a Wellness Center at my school has been a game-changer. It’s more than just a place to relax — it’s a space where I can talk about my stress, get support, and learn how to take care of my mental health.” - Karla, 11th Grader

Trauma is an unfortunate reality of life for our young people.

SHINE provides targeted recovery services to address the impacts of traumas like wildfires, COVID-19, or dealing with the death of a loved one. SHINE receives matching funds from both Napa County and the State of California to support these efforts.SHINE agencies organized a youth-led and county-wide stigma reduction campaign.

Recover from Trauma

Youth Mental Health Festival
When young people develop tools for self-care, they are better able to weather life’s ups and downs. SHINE partners all participated in Mentis’ first annual Youth Mental Health Festival, where young people learned wellness tools, including body movement exercises like yoga, walking meditations, and silent disco; arts and crafts projects including guided painting, venting jars, and empowerment bracelets; therapy animals; budgeting and savings tips to promote financial wellness; and nutrition and healthy snacking.

Support Group Programs
Support groups can decrease social isolation and help young people realize that they are not alone in their feelings and struggles. SHINE funds provide training for parents, schools and community-based mental health partners on the evidence-based trauma support group programs including: Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) and Bounce Back, both programs for students exposed to a traumatic event and are experiencing traumatic stress symptoms.

Maximize Impact

Mental wellness is a key determinant of an individual’s and a community’s success and happiness.

And when the stakes are this high, collaboration is a necessity. SHINE organized a county-wide network of the very best partners to coordinate a collective impact approach to sustaining mental health services for students.

Series of Agreements
One of the ways SHINE maximizes its impact is by bringing together the county’s nonprofit leaders, thinkers and doers to infuse the school system with much-needed mental health services, support and fix the way services are delivered, and allow schools to focus on teaching and learning.

Network of Care
When a student is in crisis, they likely would benefit from multiple supports and services. SHINE has meticulously mapped and cataloged all the student mental health services available across all school sites, creating a model for a Network of Care that raises awareness among partners about what is needed, what is available, and how the services all work together to support our youth. The model also helps identify gaps in services and organize the services so that all students have access to the right care for them.
